• Tassal is planning to expand fish farming operations in the Buccaneer Archipelago — an area that includes important Dambimangari sea country.
  • The company’s plan is currently being reviewed by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).
  •  The Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC) has been involved in discussions about this proposal, including the possibility of working more closely with Tassal through a formal agreement later this year.
  • While DAC sees that the project could bring jobs and other opportunities, there are still serious concerns about protecting the environment and cultural heritage.

The Dambimangari Aboriginal Corporation (DAC), on behalf of the Dambimangari Traditional Owners, acknowledges the potential employment and economic benefits that Tassal’s proposed fish farming expansion could bring to the region.

DAC is currently considering entering into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Tassal later this year, and we remain open to working together in a way that benefits both our community and the environment.

However, we also want to make clear that there are still some important environmental and cultural heritage concerns with the proposal. These concerns are not just held by Dambimangari people — they are also shared by the broader community.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) is currently reviewing the project, and we understand that the final decision will be made by the Hon. Matthew Swinbourn, Minister for the Environment. We are hopeful that these concerns will be properly considered before any approval is granted.

Dambimangari remains committed to ensuring any development on our Country is respectful, sustainable, and protects the land and sea we continue to care for. We look forward to continued dialogue with all stakeholders as this process moves forward.
